Not every piece of content needs a copywriter. Sometimes writing it yourself is the obvious choice. Other times, handing it over to a copywriting agency saves your team time, keeps your messaging consistent, and ensures polished content. Here are five situations where hiring a copywriter makes sense for your business.
1. When nobody has time to write it
Have someone on your team who knows the subject, writes well, and has the time? Let them write. But when everyone’s busy, even important content can sit on the calendar for weeks or months. Everyone agrees the blog post or webpage update matters, but nobody has an afternoon to spare.
That’s where an agency comes in. They take the task off your plate, run with it, and create publish-ready content. They’ll do the research, pull from existing sources, or hold a brief interview with your experts. They spend a half hour answering questions instead of an afternoon writing.
2. When the stakes are higher than usual
When the words shape how people see your business, it’s worth handing them to an agency whose job is to get them right. Think of a new website, an annual report, or a rebrand: the stakes are higher, and the words carry more weight.
Routine content is different. Weekly newsletters, job postings, and regular website updates tend to follow a familiar format. You know what needs to be said, and the wording doesn’t have to be perfect. That’s work your team can handle.
3. When you’re writing in a second language
If your team writes in a second language, an agency can make sure the content sounds as natural as it does in your native language. Many Dutch teams are perfectly comfortable speaking English, but conversational fluency doesn’t always carry over to the page.
Sometimes the writing just doesn’t sound right, stiff where it should be warm, formal where it should be direct. Other times, getting it written at all is a job in itself.
An agency that works in both Dutch and English can polish what your team has written or translate and adapt a piece for a new audience. You remain in control of your message. They make sure the wording works.
4. When you can’t find the words
Your team might struggle with communicating your brand, a new product, or a technical concept. An agency brings an outside perspective that makes even the most complex ideas easy to understand for your audience.
The problem is knowing your business too well. Everything feels important, and the jargon comes naturally.
An agency looks at your business through your reader’s eyes, works out what matters most, and cuts the jargon you’ve stopped noticing.
5. When your content needs consistency
An agency sets the voice and keeps it consistent: the tone, terms, and other small choices nobody wants to debate. You simply provide the agency with the raw materials, and your website, press releases, and reports come back sounding like one company.
That said, if one person writes everything or your team consistently follows a style guide, keeping the writing in-house is manageable. Most companies have neither. The writing gets spread around: marketing, sales, subject experts. Everyone brings their own way of writing, and it shows on the page.
So, should you hire a copywriting agency?
You don’t need an agency for everything, but when the stakes are high, your team doesn’t have time, or you can’t find the right words in another language, bringing in an agency can make the job easier and the result better.
